We’ve all had our work ripped off. It sucks. This joint PSA from myself and Loldwell hopes to make a different to all of you out there who do good work. Help us spread it around! More about it is on the main post on my site. Of course, check out Caldwell’s post about it as well.
Here on Tumblr I try to provide a little “behind the scenes” information about the comics I do. I know this is a big one, so thanks for even scrolling down this far.
I’ve been a big fan of Caldwell’s work for a long time, and met him at a fair number of conventions. The man is amazing. Anyway, both of us have had our work ripped off plenty of times (me with the “Cycle of Time Suck” and him with just about everything, especially since he writes/draws for CollegeHumor.com. So a while back we got to work on this. It took a lot of collaboration. A few hour-long screen sharing meetings (since we live in DC / NYC).
Finally, we had all the pieces we wanted, and we agonized about it. So many little details about where it’s going, making sure we sent the right message, making sure we hit all the right marks along the way, etc. The “Repetative Online Feedback Loop?” That alone took about 10 minutes of going through a whole series of word-association to see what to call it that was ALSO a funny acronym. And all of that is before the artwork.
The artwork itself went through a few rounds back and forth. Artists working together produces something so amazing in collaboration, because we have a need to do something better when egged on by another person. Caldwell did the original chart “sketch”. I did a run of my “half” (I use the term loosely) of the artwork. Caldwell sent me his back, but I couldn’t just post it. I needed to take another crack at my end of things, to make it live up to the awesomeness that Caldy had added in.
I’ll post the drafts as soon as I can. In the meantime, hope you like these posts and thanks for spreading this comic around.
