Just got my tix for Super Art Fight X! Making sure I’ve got guaranteed admission since I have a feeling it’ll sell out.
It’s so great to see how far the event and movement has come since Super Art FIght I in the upstairs of the Ottobar.
For a quick synopsis, a Super Art Fight generally involves two artists (though there are tag team and 4-way bouts) each working simultaneously on a series of large canvases, creating competitively and collaboratively on a unique piece of art. Each art fighter is given an initial topic to draw, and then every five minutes the Wheel of Death is spun and they are given a new topic to add to the mix. At any point, the art fighter can choose to stop working on their topic and move to their opponent’s side of the canvas, to warp or manipulate their opponent’s work, generally with hilarious, creative, or disturbing results. After the bout is over (30 minutes usually) the audience chooses the winner based on their art, their ability to illustrate the topics given (either correctly or creatively) and their use of the entire canvas and their opponent’s art as building blocks. There are plenty of videos on YouTube if the idea piques your interest.
If you live in the Baltimore area, you should definitely try and come out. If not to this one, then one in the near future (main events are held a few times a year.) If you’re not in the Baltimore area, keep an eye on www.superartfight.com, cause they go around to various conventions on the East Coast spreading the art love.
